There, you can observe a different kind of nature.”

– Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Italian Journey –

The history of Villa Cavalletti stems from the unique topography of the Alban Hills, shaped by the activity of the ancient Latium Volcano. Craters, ridges, valleys, and slopes descending toward the Roman countryside have created a distinctive landscape, marked by the volcanic lakes of Albano and Nemi, the presence of Mount Cavo, and particularly fertile tuff and pozzolanic soils. The abundance of water and the dry, breezy climate have, since ancient times, fostered human settlement and the development of agriculture.

As early as the 8th century B.C., the area was inhabited by Latin peoples associated with the cult of Jupiter Lazialis on Mons Albanus, now known as Monte Cavo. Vine cultivation and wine production were an integral part of religious and community life: wine, offered to the deity during ceremonies and sacrifices, took on profound ritual and identity-defining significance.

A key piece of evidence from this pre-Roman period came to light in 1902, when the Villa Cavalletti necropolis was discovered by chance during the planting of a vineyard covering approximately 2,500 square meters. The findings documented the presence of protohistoric communities in the Grottaferrata area, revealing that the estate’s agricultural landscape harbored a millennia-old history beneath its vineyards.

During the Roman era, the Alban Hills were chosen by patrician families to build residences dedicated to “otium,” surrounded by nature and overlooking Rome. This tradition was revived between the 16th and 17th centuries with the Tuscolan Villas, built by the aristocracy and the high clergy. Villa Cavalletti, which belonged to Cardinal Cesi and later to the family from which it takes its name, is part of this tradition.

The villas embodied the classical ideal of the locus amoenus: a pleasant, secluded place where architecture, gardens, water, and the agricultural landscape formed a harmonious whole. The fertility of the soil, the availability of building materials, and the extraordinary view of the Roman countryside made this area a privileged retreat for rest, study, and contemplation.

In the 18th century, the Alban Hills became a key stop on the Grand Tour. European travelers, intellectuals, and artists made their way to Frascati and its villas to explore the classical heritage and study a different kind of natural landscape. Goethe celebrated the pure, crisp air, while Corot, Turner, Vernet, and Schinkel transformed vistas, ruins, and volcanic landscapes into images destined to cement the region’s legendary status.

Villa Cavalletti still preserves this layered history today: a landscape born of the volcano, inhabited by ancient Latin communities, transformed by the culture of the Tuscolan Villas, and immortalized by the eyes of Grand Tour travelers.

Book your stay at Villa Cavalletti now at: https://www.villacavalletti.it/

“In the hills—in Albano, Castelgandolfo, and Frascati, where I spent three days last week—the air is always pure and clear.
