Located in the Alban Hills, in the countryside southeast of Rome, it is a favorite destination for those who wish to explore noble villas, places of worship, archaeological sites, and landscapes linked to the region’s agricultural heritage.

The main landmark isthe Greek Abbey of Saint Nilus, also known as the Exarchic Monastery of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata. It was founded in 1004 by a group of Greek monks from southern Italy, led by Saint Nilus of Rossano. The Abbey still observes the Greek-Byzantine rite and is the last remaining Byzantine monastery of those that were once widespread in southern Italy and Rome.

The Library, the National Museum, and the Roveriano Castle are also part of the complex’s history. The Library houses Greek and Latin manuscripts, incunabula, printed books, and rare palimpsests. The Museum houses archaeological finds, sarcophagi, funerary inscriptions, ceramics, and precious liturgical vestments. The Roveriano Castle, with its walls and fortress, was built to protect the monastery during the conflicts that affected Rome and the Tuscolan region.

Among the most evocative sites are the Catacombs of Ad Decimum, located at the tenth mile of the ancient Via Latina. Discovered by chance while working on a vineyard, they contain about a thousand burials dating from the 2nd to the 5th century A.D. The tunnels, carved out of peperino stone, preserve inscriptions, graffiti, and paintings from the ancient Christian communities.

The tour can continue with a visit to the Church of St. Joseph, consecrated in 1889 and notable for the Santovetti family crypt, which is decorated with paintings in the Pompeian style.

A few kilometers from Grottaferrata lies the Tuscolo Archaeological and Cultural Park. The earliest traces of human settlement date back to the Bronze Age; later, Tuscolo became a center of the Latin League and, during the Roman era, a favored location for the summer residences of scholars and emperors. The city was completely destroyed in 1191.

The journey can continue through the Tuscolan Villas, including Villa Falconieri, built in the 16th century on the site of an ancient Roman villa and later transformed by Francesco Borromini. Heading toward Albano Laziale, you’ll also come across the Severian Amphitheater and the Cisternoni di Albalonga, built in the 3rd century AD to ensure the water supply for the Parthian Legion’s encampment.

Villa Cavalletti is an ideal starting point for exploring Grottaferrata and the Castelli Romani. Staying at the estate allows you to experience a region where history, religious culture, archaeology, noble villas, and agricultural traditions come together to form a single narrative.

Book your stay at Villa Cavalletti now at: https://www.villacavalletti.it/

Grottaferrata is one of the most prestigious and elegant historic towns in the Castelli Romani.
