Sustainable tourism is not just about protecting the environment, but also about communities’ ability to participate in decisions and in promoting their own heritage. This is the central theme of the book *Tourism, Communities, Territories: Frontiers of Sustainability*, to which Villa Cavalletti dedicated two events in 2021.
The book analyzes the new forms of tourism adopted by destinations seeking to promote their human capital and their tangible and intangible heritage. This perspective has become even more relevant during the pandemic and is defined in the book as community-based tourism.
The first part of the publication addresses the topic from a theoretical and methodological perspective, analyzing the involvement of local communities in decision-making processes and the tools needed to make this possible.
The second part brings together experiences, best practices, and project proposals in which the development of the local area stems from the participation of the host communities. The third, on the other hand, proposes a governance model for the implementation and regional expansion of community-based tourism.
An entire chapter of the book is devoted to Villa Cavalletti, which is presented as an initiative linked to the new frontiers of sustainable tourism.
The first meeting took place on September 24, 2021. The presentation was introduced and moderated by Costantino D’Orazio of the Rome Capital Superintendency, with remarks by Marco Brogna of Sapienza University of Rome, Maria Cristina Leardini of SharryLand, and Antonio Pelosi of Albergo Etico.
The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Department of History, Cultural Heritage, Education, and Society at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Ospitalità Castelli Romani, and Frascati Scienza.
The series continued in November 2021 with a new presentation of Simone Bozzato’s book at Confindustria. The event reaffirmed the need to develop forms of tourism that give local communities an active role in managing and telling the stories of their regions.
Villa Cavalletti’s inclusion in this volume reflects a vision in which hospitality, agriculture, culture, and environmental heritage come together to create an experience rooted in participation and sustainability.
